21 attendees at the April 8th meeting of Network Plano heard a great presentation by one of our members. The 10 minute presentation was given by Mel Williams of Fuel Freedom International. Mel and a business partner offer sales coaching seminars on cruise ships to provide a relaxing environment to grow your sales skills and enjoy a vacation at the same time.
Mel’s 10 minute presentation focused on the power of influencing people:
People follow people who influence them.
How do you get people to follow your influence?
The biggest way to influence people revolves around building trust.
The following is the 5 ‘C’ s of building trust:
“A good name is worth more, and is more desirable than riches” – King Solomon
Character – what you are inside
Your integrity is what strengthens your character and allows you to influence others. This requires owning up to your weaknesses.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Competence – the knowledge and ability you have in your products/services
Study, study, study….get to know it inside and out and you can answer questions competently. If you don’t know the answer….don’t fake it. Be honest about what you don’t know.Confidence – it can be real, perceived or…..even faked
Dress and appearance contribute to one’s confidence so look the part. Remaining calm will always give off a perception of confidence.
John Rockefeller started Standard Oil with no money and used "worthless" stock in lieu of paying his creditors. He sold that stock on the confidence he had in himself and people invested in Standard Oil solely due to the conviction of Mr. Rockefeller.
Remember that a first impression lasts and is obtained in the first 4 minutes they meet you. Never downplay the importance eye contact in presenting confidence.Credibility – a "must-have" to be a leader/influencer
When meeting a new contact or prospect, ask for an introduction from someone they know. Lean on your involvement in a community group, homeowner’s association, church, etc. to build credibility amongst people you haven’t met.Congruence – make your words match your actions
"walk the talk" – your actions must support your words.
There are a couple of cruises scheduled in the future.
Mexican Riviera in December, 2008
Alaska in September, 2009
